Profiling

Displacement profiling has many applications, but at its core it is a vital tool for building a sound and agreed-upon evidence base for strategic decision-making, securing funds and designing effective policies and programmes.

Profiling exercises generate information for both humanitarian and development interventions to prevent, reduce and respond to displacement, but they are also useful in ways that go beyond the data they produce. Their collaborative nature generates consensus and fosters a culture of working together that is central to the undertakings they seek to inform.

About profiling

The collaborative character is but one of many aspects in which profiling differs from other data collection exercises. It is also the cornerstone of our approach at JIPS, through the buy-in and sustained engagement of government partners, humanitarian and development stakeholders at local and national level, and – importantly – the communities affected by displacement themselves. Countries we support

As JIPS we help make profiling exercises a reality in two vital ways:

  1. We advise and support them as an “honest broker”, a neutral interlocutor that brings parties with different agendas together to agree on numbers and information objectives.
  2. We also provide technical support in shaping objectives and data collection methods, and in data analysis, report writing and dissemination.

Uses of profiling

Displacement profiling has many applications that go beyond the data they produce. Read about concrete examples where profiling has been useful, for instance to inform policy design, better understand the unique challenges of internal displacement in urban settings,  inform durable solutions analysis, or helped to foster consensus.
